SEAL of Refuge (Guardians of Refuge Book 1) by Alyssa Bailey

Alesha loves her Alaskan island home, but two years after a painful breakup, she is still overly cautious when dating men. When a widowed Naval officer extricates her from a sticky situation, they find an instant attraction, and he steals her heart. He seems too good to be true. That’s because he is.

When the Navy offers SEAL Commander Zayden Wellesley the career opportunity of a lifetime, he accepts. Finally, things are looking up. He likes to do things orderly, and by the book, unfortunately, raising children, a SEAL’s life, and dating, rarely follow the rules. Alli doesn’t. Things are finally going according to Zed’s plan except for one little snag: he neglects to inform her he has roommates.

Soon, Zed is scrambling to protect his own, save his career, and secure his relationship before it’s too late. When things don’t go to plan and danger threatens all he holds dear, it will take the Guardians’ training and expertise to get them through safely.

He has learned to roll with the punches, can Alli?

Read an excerpt:
“I missed you, sweetheart.”

There was affection and relief in his voice as he reached for her. Alli stepped back. He looked so good, she wanted to cry. His voice tugged her deeply, her core contracted, releasing liquid arousal. Her chest tightened in desire. She’d waited what seemed like forever to be in those arms, to feel that heat surround her. Her knees felt weak, and she wondered how long her legs would hold her up. Instead of reaching for him, she held firm, her voice cool.

“Zed. You made it.”

His look was hesitant and hurt. Hurt? It was her prerogative to feel betrayed, given his lack of disclosure, not his.

“Yes, but you already know that.” How dare his voice carry any censure in it! “Can I come in?”

Katrina’s words sounded rude in her head. Yes, Katrina hit her father’s mannerisms on the head, but he was so much more.

“Of course, you can, but I don’t know if I want you to.” Her tummy was pinging again at the sound of his deep, calm voice. She wanted him so damn bad. “I’m not sure what to think right now.”

“Alesha.” The pause was for effect, and it did its job. “Let me in, sweetheart. I’ll explain everything.”

That voice. You’d think Zed was talking to a naughty child. A naughty, beloved child that belonged to him. Her tummy tingled again, and her core danced a little jig. Traitor. Tears welled in her eyes, and she absolutely hated it.

He pleaded well in a controlling sort of way. Alli stepped back to allow Zed inside and closed the door behind him before she’d even processed what she’d done. Too late, she remembered she didn’t want to hear his excuses. Yet, here he stood in her entryway, in expectation of what? The entryway was much smaller with him in it, and she fought the urge to step into his arms. He’d invaded her breathing space but didn’t touch. She ached for his kiss. His thumbs wiped her tears, and she had to fight hard to stop them from taking over. Her mind fought her disloyal body. Turning without a word, she led him to the kitchen and offered him coffee, all with jerky movements of forcing her body to do what it didn’t want to do, resist.

“No, thanks. I had my fill at breakfast this morning.”

She nodded and poured herself another cup before sitting at the table. Zed walked to the stand that held the pot of flowering plants he’d sent.

“Needs water, don’t you think?”

“Yes, I’ve been gone and forgot to tell someone to take care of it. I guess I’m not the only one that feels neglected. However, I did overwater it before I left.” She took a deep breath praying she wouldn’t break. “So, obviously, you aren’t the only one who forgets things, except, in this case, I think my transgression is easily trumped by yours.”

“Alesha.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Alyssa Bailey is a USA Today and International best-selling author. She loves writing realistic romance for the naughty in all of us. Power exchange adventures between strong, intelligent, sassy women who aren’t afraid to take a stand and men confident enough to give his woman space to be who she is, but Alpha enough to keep her safe despite her choices or his, is a common theme.

Family and community are important to Alyssa, and it’s one reason she loves series. She is expanding her horizons and her comfort zone with every new book, and that’s exciting. Sometimes, suspense and mystery stir the plot, other times, it’s crazy, day to day angst, antics, and danger. Whatever goes on before, there’s always a happily-ever-after at the end of the day.
