Sevas turned to her. This time his eyes were hard, cold, and more focused than they’d yet been under the hazeleaf.

“I can count the people I care about on one hand, because I’ve lost more. I don’t intend to lose anyone else, and Nepherik’s getting off easy because I’m tired.”

Aster’s face quirked. “What’s the alternative if being blown up by a matter grenade’s ‘getting off easy’?”

Sevas’ eyes went harder, his voice lower.

“If he dares to harm anyone I love, I will visit such horrors upon him, the old gods will name new sins for them.”

He sat up, never breaking eye contact, shirt opening more than it already had.

“I would invent so many sins for you.”

Rion wondered if Sevas was aware of how deeply his eyes gazed into Aster’s for those words, how his tone sounded like one that would necessitate a contraceptive gem in the near future. Aster took a step back, albeit with a face that suggested she wanted to leap forward, right onto that bed, and bounce on him until the hazeleaf wore off.

But it was also a face that had never heard Sevas say such words before.

Rion put a quick, guiding hand on her shoulder.

“I’m not sure you should be here while he’s high off his ass,” he said hastily. This was a Sevas who would say exactly what he meant and not remember it once the potion wore off. Whatever Sevas’ feelings for her, this wasn’t how she should hear them.

“I’m as on my ass as I’ve ever been!” Sevas blurted.
